Seriously, if as few as 15% of BP and Shells customers bought gas elsewhere BP and Shell would reduce prices to bring those customers back! And as the gas prices at BP and Shell drop their competition would also drop prices to remain competitive!

BP sold off their stations over 6 years ago. The BP stations are owned by independent folks, like the guy who lives next door to you. And he or she usually works 80 hour weeks, not 40. And donates to your daughter's soccer team. And buys an ad in your son's yearbook. And donates to your church. Boycott away.

It is very easy for me to boycott BP gas. There used to be a BP refinery in Texas City (the cause of the 2005 explosion, NOT the 1947 explosion) but it was sold to Marathon Petroleum to raise money to pay for Deepwater Horizon.
Besides, I usually drive on Phillips 66 or Shell. Own stock in both companies. I'll also do Conoco as that's a Phillips 66 brand.

Many gas stations are branded with a company, but are independantly owned and are only contractually tied to and oil company for gas. Boycotts hurt them far more than the corporation they are aimed at.

In California you don not find many BP stations anymore. They are either ARCO, or have independent names. Such as Valley Gas.

I haven't bought BP gas since before the oil spill. The station near my home was usually some of the cheapest gas in the state but the pumps were always in poor repair, the pay stations never worked; the place was just run down and always a mess. I can only imagine what the fuel tanks were like and what might have been making its way into my car. So I stopped buying from that station. Then the oil spill happened and encouraged me to just keep driving if I need fuel and come across a BP station.
I ended up moving to Scottsdale and the cheapest gas here is usually Costco or my Fry's fuel center so I always fill up at those places. Fry's is especially nice with the fuel discounts and the fact I can pay with my credit card and get a percentage back. Ultimately though, especially at Costco, I'm sure some gasoline refined from BP oil still makes it way into my tank, but I don't consciously buy their gas.

I have the BP rewards Visa card. Only gas station I use. I use Gas Buddy App to find the cheapest BP station.

Haven't used them in like 3 years. When they all became Hindu owed I stopped but for every once in awhile. But the when all that oil ended up releasing into our waters that was the final straw.

I'm like mr thumper, I buy Arco gas because it's usually the cheapest. We have 2 Arco's within a mile and they usually fight it out to be the cheapest. That's good for us.

I'm not sure but I thought BP/ARCO were one in the same. I purchase ARCO simply because it is (usually) the cheapest I can find. Rarely I will find a Valero beating them by one-three cents but not too often!

When I can afford not to I do, or at least try to. To be perfectly honest, I'm not certain who supplies the gas to the stations I go to most of the time. Near where I live, most the the cheapest gas prices come from big-box retailers or grocery store gas stations.
