Don't go to stations where they post the wrong price on the sign!

Also, one gas station has light-up signs saying $2.52/gal, but then you find out that's the loyalty card price.

I'm lobbying to get rid of the fake unit of money in the ".9" at the end of the gas prices. It doesn't exist, and it is used as a means of feigning competition - particularly here in Canada where the price of gasoline is by the litre.

Ran into an instance of a sign price not matching the pump price tonight. The pump price was $.02 lower than the sign price. They are trying to compete with the station across the street, and I think someone just forgot to change the sign.

Why should you beware of the pay cash for 20 cents less?

Assuming it's legitimate, that is.

hnofer:
I understand what you're saying; in this area a station cannot display the cash price, if it's lower than the credit card price, unless it's clearly identifed as being the cash price. Most stations, however, post both prices prominently, and the law says that the size of the numbers must be the same; a station cannot, for example, have the cash price in 18 inch numbers and the credit price in 6 inch numbers.

Still, I would tell everyone to carry a $20 bill in the car or their wallet, just in case.

To Gas_Buddy: Yeah but read the OP, I was referring to the price posted being a loyalty card price not cash price. Let me next time carry a loyalty card for every gas station, just in case

Part of the problem, forgetting that most stations don't deliberately post the wrong price, is that you don't find out that the "wrong" price was posted until you get there; you can't just "don't go to stations..." because you you don't know the price is wrong."

That said, maybe the answer is: assume that the price is a cash price and carry, a small amount of paper money on you or in your glove compartment or clipped to your car's sun visor "just in case."

Yes but sometimes you pull off the highway, and make a U-turn, because of the price on the sign, not because I have super vision and saw the price on the pump then decided not to get off the highway.

It's funny how much people like to argue online about ridiculous things that have no point.

Oh, grow up. One always checks the pump before pumping and then acts accordingly.

I saw a sign 2 cents lower and it was the deal they give to cash customers --- not credit or debit cards

A lot of Shell stations around here with $3.39 for a price are using small 3's for the middle 3 because they're not used to using all 3's for the first digit!!

there is a phillips 66 sign on a closed station around here, it still says $4.119 for snl.

that could happen in 4-6 months.

Using backward E, upward 6 or 9 is being creative, improvising while waiting for a solution.

There is a gas pump price and a sign price. Both are totally independent. I normally go by the gas pump price.

It's not funny when they use backwards Es for the number to the left of the decimal point.

And it's not funny when they use the number 3 for the number to the left of the decimal point, either.

One of my local Speedways recently decided to post the Premium price a penny higher than the actual sales price. They had run out of 3's!

Could be a ploy to get you into the station for impulse buys.

So then, they're not posting the wrong price on the sign; just not indicating what the requirement is to get that price (that is, that you had to be a "loyalty" buyer, whatever that is - sorry, I'm familiar with using a station's credit card but not a "loyalty" membership).

Seems like they posted the right price, just no explanation what you needed to do to get gas at that price. Here, in the D.C. metro area (including Maryland and Northern Virginia), places that have different cash/credit prices indicate that the price is cash, though many now post both prices in large numbers, or (some stations, including the Excel chain) indicate one price, and when you get to the pump, you see that if you pay cash you will get a 5 cent or so discount (and the Excel stations provide a free cup of coffee or tea for those going into the station to pay).

To Gas_Buddy on the sign it just said UNLEADED $2.52/GAL, no specification whatsoever, and without the regular (non-loyalty brand) price posted anywhere (except on the pump of course but that's not visible until 10 feet away from the pump).

Wait a second...
Are they posting the wrong price on the sign, or are they posting the correct price on the sign, just not the price you're looking for?

In this area, the DC Metro area, the signs clearly indicate if the posted price is a cash price.

But this thread is saying "Wrong Price on Sign". The wrong price on the sign doesn't seem to be the problem hnofer17's talking about in the original post.

I feel you. I hate driving into a gas station driven by the price on the sign just to find out is either cash price, loyalty program or any other crap they can come up with.

So the sign isn't incorrect, just incomplete.
