Yep, I have slowed down on driving, and when I drive; I drive slower. Do 4 or 5 errands, go home and stay there for 2 days...

This wouldn't just send a msg to the oil companies, but also a msg to employers to quit with their crap!
Our company in
2008 came out with a 5% pay cut across the board (outside of executives who still gave themselves millions in shares) 2009 NO RAISE 2010 NO RAISE 2011 2% RAISE 2012 NO RAISE - not even telling us there wouldn't be one, just didn't bring it up
All the while, the executives/board gift themselves with millions of dollars in shares telling us we have to do with less...
I'm all for the 1 day off... At this point I'd almost do one day a month!

I would love that but I would rather not get fired from my job. Here's something that may actually work - we should work with employers to have more positions set up where you can work from home and either commute part time or on occasion. The cost savings to employers could be huge based on not having to house employees and employees will not have the burden of rush hour.

I highly doubt that 99 percent of us have sick days. Especially since Walmart doesn't give sick days.
Why cant it involve government workers. Our pay is frozen for at least 3 years. That means when fuel prices go up and then the commodities go up as a result, we will be stuck at the same pay those 3 years, especially now that they are cutting out step increases also. Government workers get 4 hours of sick leave every two weeks. I have 5000 hours of it.
And why would you think it would help if a good number of people in a given state calling in sick for one day would help fuel prices? Don't you think that people who did call in sick, would do other things that involved driving?

Hyundave: You have been a member of GasBuddy for 2 year now and have 1,690 points top show for it? Many members earn that amount of points in less than 2 days. Instead of proposing "ridiculous and unproductive" ideas, contribute to the site by updating gas prices. That is information others find value in.

Watch the unemployment go up in these locations. What a moronic idea.

That would not accomplish a thing. An extremely bad idea.
You make an exception for government workers (laughable). What about patient care workers? Transportation workers moving perishable items? Small business owners cannot pay sick time with no income. Many jobs do not include the benefit of sick pay.

I love the exception he carves out for "government workers of any sort". After all, the whole world would come to an end if the Assistant Undersecretary of the Regional Bureau of Helium Storage took 8 hours of leave.

"Your thoughts? Probably ridiculous and unproductive"
What, our thoughts or your suggestion? I submit the latter.
"but if we also, say, all sent an email to, say, the President and said, for example, "hey, you -- you say you can't do anything about gas prices. We can do something worse -- we can bring the whole country to a standstill with a work boycott... Next time, we'll do just that -- and take a week off," it might turn some heads."
Oh, a work boycott, like that place we each go to earn money to buy stuff like food, clothing, and shelter. Your post started out with a half decent subject, but the content sent it quickly downhill. Just cut back on unnecessary driving and utilize other, more conventional fuel saving methods.
"Or he'll just call everybody racist or blame Bush... Probably the latter. He has yet to do anything substantial except try to wreck health care, so, yeah, he'll jsut play the blame game as usual."
Hmm, he doesn't seem to be the one playing the blame game in this thread. Like Gas Buddy, I would have expected better from such a long time member.

I might have expected such a suggestion from a new member, not from a long time member (although, one with only about a half dozen gas price posts in that time).
Let me phrase your suggestion another way and see if it makes sense. If you have a holiday and it falls on the weekend, it's now a three day holiday, and not all three day holidays are reason to travel/use your car. It doesn't particularly affect the industry. Second, people take Christmas off, and for that matter take several days off, and it doesn't affect the industry.
But if you're going to do what you suggested, people don't go to work (forgetting ANY other ramifications or implications), and even if you include the government workers, how do you get your point across doing it a little bit at at time, only state by state?
And how, exactly, would you bring the country to a standstill any more than it comes to on Christmas for example? And, why should the international oil market really care over the course of time?
Better yet, think of it this way. When the country was essentially closed for several days after the September 11, 2001 attacks, including much of the international aviation industry, do you remember oil prices dropping? I hope you don't say yes, you do, because prices didn't drop for three months, and it wasn't a result of the attacks or the country being at a virtual standstill.
