I can only say that there are a lot of misconceptions about hybrids.

A hybrid has the same, or better, range as a gas vehicle.
Mainly because it runs on gas, but usually gets better mileage.

Cost and parts used. The battery system on the Toyotas are very bad for the environment. The lithium ion batteries are better and easier to recycle.

When electric vehicles get around $20,000 - $22,000 I'll buy one. I would think there are bigger profit margin in the electric vehicle. I know the batteries are expensive, but I would think that the electric motor would be cheaper than the gas combustion engine. No spark plugs, pistons, cam shaft, etc.

For electric cars, we need lots of charging stations. (How long to get a charge?) For charging stations we need lots of electric cars. Chicken or egg? How do we deal with battery disposal? Another mercury light bulb problem?

Quite agree, Geo. PLUS the administration would rather regulate coal (needed for electricity) than get coal.
The green-energy companies should be run by the private sector, not the government.
Also, the cars themselves are expensive.

There is nothing about a hybrid that makes sense to me as of this point in time; not reliable in cold weather, too costly to purchase, batteries are NOT environmental... better to have a hybrid lawn mower... mowing a lawn with a gas lawn mower contributes more to pollution than a modern auto.

batteries by nature take longer to charge and takes less charge over time. They wont work as well in cold weather. I wont trust them to run a car

Hybids as they are now are a joke. The one that will win out will be Hydrogen, great range as safe or safer than gasoline, and water doesn't pollute. Several have been in use for years, with great results...Hyundai has even tested one with no problems cross country.....A company I worked for 28 years ago used hydrgen, and we made our own w/hydrogen Generator with unit the size of a bowling bag and distilled water tanks.....Oil companies just don't want this knowledge our there!

I just heard a news report yesterday that it can take up to eleven years to break even because of the high initial cost and the cost of electricity to charge the vehicle.

In doing some research, the only one I'd consider to maybe think about is the Lincoln MKZ, since they charge same price if Hybrid or not. That may make it more accessible, other wise they aree out of my range. Any of them, and all electric is not and option for me. Don't like the idea of charging them all the time. Just to save gas, when I end up paying more for the electricity to charge it, then eventually it dies anyway. I checked as my sister in Michigan has a Prius, and being laid up for a year the battery is dead, they want 3700.00 just for the battery, no discussion on labor or any other costs, like towing it in, when you can't start it.

Right now, being laid off, I couldn't even afford to try to buy any kind or ordinary used car even if the cost of the vehicle would be under 2 or 3,000.00 dollars, so I wouldn't even venture to try to own such a car. Now, even If I could afford it, I still wouldn't purchase such an expensive car just to save a few pennies that could only be realized after the unattractive length of the time of the long term ownership of the car that would be necessary before any promised savings are realized.
Then there is the limitation on how far it can go on a charge. Where are the recharge stations located? Would I be able to travel to a distant destination in safety and with peace of mind or would I become stranded somewhere in the middle of my trip with no way of recharging the battery?
If I sound confused, then you've read me right! Have a great day everyone.

Other. Hybrids are so far from being green its ridiculous. How green is it to have a massive battery in your car and then 12 years down the line when it stops charging it goes into the ground at the dump? Yeah thats a pretty "green" thing to do right there. Get a vw diesel. Better reliablity, MILEAGE, and will last forever because its a diesel. And as of right now diesel is 3.99 by my work which is 20 cents cheaper than regular unleaded.

You have to drive like 10 years to start the offset of the premium they added to the base price.
Why buy when you can get a VW diesel that is just as fuel efficient.

bulbous that's strange, I've driven a few TDIs and never had cold starting problems even during cold snowy Ontario monrings.
Plus, unless the fuel is 30% higher than petrol it's still a better deal than the equivalent gasser model. Sure the Prius is more efficient, but the VW TDI remains a good alternate choice for highway drivers.
In my area gas is about $3.299 and for diesel to lose 100% of its savings it'd have to cost me $4.809. Which it doesn't, even at the most expensive Shells in town. It's more like $3.699.
But like an earlier poster, the missing option for me is 'because it doesn't meet my needs'. I need to travel and that negates electric. And hybrids don't do any better than my TDI on the highway and have less passing power for the most part.
If people really want CHEAP motoring they wouldn't buy NEW ANYTHING and instead go for a late model blandmobile like a Corolla or Civic… minimal maintenance costs will more than offset the slightly more consumptive fuel costs. In the end either would beat out a new Prius or TDI or Leaf or whatever.

RX7racer, i don't know what canadien diesel costs, but the price in the us is sometimes $.40 to $1.00/gallon higher than gas.also a vw tdi costs more than a prius according to consumer reports gets fewer mpg.my vw diesel was always unreliable in cold weather,i don't know about the tdi cold weather starting.i owned 3vws and after i had the diesel i promised i would never buy another. my first vw was a bettle with no air conditioning and a warm air heater that blew snow out the defrosters in cold weather.i will say it never failed to start until it dropped a valve through the top of a piston at 90000 miles and i junked it.all my vws were junked, since then i have driven buicks, hondas,&toyotos and always had something to sell to cover part of my next car.
