General Motors fuel economy engineers Ann Wenzlick and Beth Nunning recently ran an experiment. Both drove a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze for a typical workday to figure out the best and worst ways to improve fuel economy for any vehicle.

The 2012 Chevy Cruze gets an EPA estimated 25 mpg (city), 36 mpg (highway) and 29 mpg combined when equipped with a 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder engine, 6-speed manual transmission.

Driving the same vehicle but in very different ways, believe it or not, one was able to get 250 more miles out of a tank of gas.

Wenzlick used the following tips to maximize her fuel efficiency:
1. Get out of the drive-through lane. Idling for just 15 minutes can waste a quart of gasoline.
2. "Take...

Buying the groceries and doing other errands after work instead of making a trip out on the weekend - even though it is only 3-4 miles across town - has kept a lot of gas in my tank. My grandmother would be proud of me. She would walk 3 miles to town to return an 8-cent box of baking soda when she got home and realized she wasn't out yet. She took thrifty to another realm. I think about those stories I laughed at when I was a kid and now I realize those were lessons.

I see lots of fuel wasted by ppl sitting by the road, waiting on the school bus for a long time, cars idling.

Good article. My wife and I drive the same type vehicle - Toyota Prius. Only she normally gets about 10 miles less per gallon then I do. Driving effeciently DOES make a big difference!

WoW! I do most of the efficient ways except I live out of my car with sports then away at work all of 3 days. Still average 29 combined with hyper-miling techniques on a Hyb Hil.

Bart,

Like the oil companies would allow that.

We hear these tips all the time. I'm glad someone tested it.

The experiment results should be taught to all drivers in the United States.

Always USE Common Sense when driving, accelerate gently and coast to the traffic light or stop sign, time your travel through traffic lights so the vehicle keeps moving, never use drive through – go inside, hypermiling techniques, use cruise control when possible, never use AC (there is no need in PNW), keep those windows closed, multiple stops on same trip when doing errands, check the tire pressure regularly, use motorcycle or bicycle for short and close in trips, walk when possible. Pay attention at all times when driving or that ticket or accident will wipe out any possible savings from driving efficiently.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible!
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

I can vary the MPG on my GoldWing motorcycle from the mid 30's to mid 40's by driving habits (and top speed)

There are some good tips here but the old easy on the gas, easy on the brake, stay within the speed limit and make sure you vehicle is well maintained and in good operating condition is probably as good as the average driver will be able to do. Did we have this or a similar post a day or so ago?
