How scammers can steal your credit card information at the gas pump

CBS News -- (CBS News) - The price of gas continues to fall. AAA says the national average for regular has fallen to $3.73, down 21 cents in the past six weeks. But if you pay at the pump, thieves may be waiting for you, ready to skim the information off your bank card and siphon the money out of your account.

It's a scam called "skimming" and it costs the financial industry more than $350,000 a day, as CBS News correspondent Sharyl Attkisson reports.

Volunteer fireman Mark Young recently got out of the hospital after neck surgery, only to be dealt another blow when he checked his bank balance.

"I had $2,300 in the bank, and it said I only had $1,000 in there," Young said.

However, The national average is meaningless. Check local prices and use www.GasBuddy.com or WWW.PhoenixGasPrices.com or whoever you local web site is that posts gas prices in your area, then buy at the cheapest place that is on your route of travel. I usually buy my gas a Fry's and/or Kroger. Their base price is competitive, however, prices really get good if you purchase your groceries at Fry's/Kroger's Food and your drugs at Fry's Food and drugs, especially is you use their credit card. At my last fill up they offered me an 85 cent discount, which made the price $2.94 per gallon of regular. I would like to hear of someone beating that discounted price.

They didn't get me. You'd be dumb anyway to not notice extra crap hanging on the card reader slot.
