I have to give them credit for trying. Not easy coming up with a new car design to save gas. We got the hybrids. You can't please everybody though.

They're actually serious about it now, because:
1. Consumers are demanding it (e.g. Ford is selling lots of high mph cars; GM had to go through bankruptcy before it got the memo).
2. Tesla Motors with their all-electric cars (especially the upcoming model S midsize sedan with your choice of 160, 230, or 300 miles/charge) is scaring the pants off the old boys. (note: Tesla started by EBay founder Elon Musk, model S will be built in California).
3. They've finally come to realize that there is only so much oil around. We now have to go to the high Arctic, offshore, to many unstable foreign countries, or use yucky oilsands to get the damn stuff.

Let the markets drive the automobile market. Consumers with dollars drive those markets.

CAFE standards were doubled in the 1970s from 13 to 26 MPG. They stopped increasing when gas prices went down. The average fuel economy is now 22 MPG thanks to SUVs and trucks. Cars in the 90s are also more fuel efficient.

No, they could've done more years ago but they just kept delaying & delaying it. And now the day of reckoning is here.

NO they haven't done enough to help with anything just like our elected officials in Washington ...the Democrats voted down the plan to drill offshore again... now what is their problem? is it because it would actually bring the price of gas down and they don't want it to go down???

Now that circumstances have forced them to invest in fuel efficiency and alternative fuels, they can do little else if they want to have a future.

They made more money on large trucks/vans/suvs and did not want to spend money on research so now they are playing catch up. A few years ago at a suppliers meeting I heard upper level people from Ford, GM and Chrysler say that their customers did not care about fuel economy.

No Many automakers have come out with designs for fuel efficient or exotic vehicles that are not scheduled to be on the market until 2010 or so. It would be nice if these cars would come out earlier.

No... Pollution controls rob fuel economy by 20-30%, conservatively...
Performance parts, mufflers, air filters can do even more.
