Around here the cameras should be in the cop cars and pointed at the speedometer in the cruiser, as well as the windshield.

For some unknown reason some of these cops believe they are above the law and drive at speeds that are dangerous to the public, both in traffic and pedestrains.

High speed chases should be outlawed. There was an incident where one of these just to mention a high speed chase was in progress, and a 72 year old man was riding his bike with a little dog in the front carrier. He was struck by a cruiser and both the man and dog were killed. They were in pursuit of a stolen car. Why why why was this allowed?????????????

You asked for an opinion and this is mine.

i feel all the above but they also need more camera but this time on the cop themselves due to some of them claim that the person lunged at them or pointed something at them so they had to shot the person or had to tackle down and handcuff them and unfortunately not all police car camera can record that because either there to far or the officer was in the way.

Amazing, it's unconstitutional to have cameras to catch the morons that run red lights but it's O K to run a red light and kill someone.

The traffic light camera was unconstitutional so that is out and should be. I do believe that police cars should have them for safety reasons only. safety for the officer and for the person picked up.

CrackedLCD - "Citizens should not fear their government, their government should fear them. Cameras can be used as much for revenue generation as actual safety deterrents. To wit, some safety cameras go up at intersections and will flash your car if you're in the box during a red light. BUT that's not how the law works in most places. In most jurisdictions, the box (intersection) must be cleared and the car(s) in it have the right of way, regardless of what color the traffic light is.

True some cities do use them for revenue generation but I think you'll find most cities truely use them for safety reasons.

To run a red light, you have to be passing over the white line after it's already red. Being 3/4 the way through at 50 mph when the red comes on directly over you? That's not a red light runner. Some cameras have given those people tickets, though, and through their own ignorance they don't know they were actually OK with the law."

I think you better read you laws again. According to any traffic law I've ever read when a light is yellow your supposed to be slowing down and preparing to stop when the light turns red. Not speeding up trying to get through the intersection before it turns red. When that light turns red you are supposed to be stopped BEHIND the stop line. Technicly if you are stopped but just 1 foot beyond the stop line it's a redlight violation. If your in the middle of the intersection when the light turns red it's a red light violation. The problem is that a lot of people use the yellow light as a reason to race through an intersection so they don't have to stop at the red light because their time is worth so much that they can't afford to waste even a min at the red light.

"Red light cameras can also be abused to ticket those turning right on red. Some jurisdictions have no law about stopping before making a right on red, just yielding the right of way. That means you can turn right on red without stopping so long as the conditions warrant. But they will still ticket you for not coming to a complete stop first."

First if the camera is ticketing someone for turning right on red then it's not installed properly. But if it's only doing it when someone doesn't come to a complete stop it's actually right in line with the law. The law states when a right turn on red is allowed it's only after a complete stop is made that is why the signs state "right turn on red permitted after STOP" not after slowing down but after stopping.

"Then add in the fact that the cameras are erected by a private company who gets a cut of the ticket costs"

The reason for that is because the company that makes them also has to maintain them to keep them working properly. Don't you think the company that makes the radar guns the cops use gets some of the money from those tickets to keep the radar guns in working order? Of course they do it's just written into the costs of running the department.

The thing is if your following the traffic laws like you should you'll never get a ticket from them. As I've said before I go through two intersections everyday going back and forth to work that have had cameras for over 3 years now and I'm yet to get a ticket from them but I've seen it flash for other people many times.

“Good citizens have nothing to fear from cameras”

Then I suppose you wouldn't mind the police rifling through your personal belongs around the house each day, eh? Show me a government tool for good and I'll show you a tool that can be used for evil.

Citizens should not fear their government, their government should fear them.

Red light cameras can also be abused to ticket those turning right on red. Some jurisdictions have no law about stopping before making a right on red, just yielding the right of way. That means you can turn right on red without stopping so long as the conditions warrant. But they will still ticket you for not coming to a complete stop first.

Then add in the fact that the cameras are erected by a private company who gets a cut of the ticket costs, and the revenue generating aspect begins to outweigh the safety deterrent aspect.

But this is all irrelevant, I suppose. After all, the good citizen has nothing to hide. How much of a police state do you want up there in Alberta?

lasing wrote - "I was with my sister in-law a couple weeks ago as she SLOWLY rolled toward a red light to save gas. It snapped a picture as if she were going to run the red, but the light did in fact turn green before she went through. How is that appropriate use?"

The thing is that if part of her automobile went past the stop line before the light turned green then it's actually a red light violation according to the law. You don't have to completely go through to make it a violation. If the front of the car is past the stop line then it can be considered a violation. You have to be stopped and completely behind the stop line.
