The thing is that if part of her automobile went past the stop line before the light turned green then it's actually a red light violation according to the law. You don't have to completely go through to make it a violation. If the front of the car is past the stop line then it can be considered a violation. You have to be stopped and completely behind the stop line.

I answered in patrol cars. I should have answered more than one, since I think cameras in high crime residential areas are good to deter/detect crime.

Camera on police cars protect the citizens as well as the cops. No one is above the law and hopefully the cameras will prove it.

Seems like a lot of good thoughts posted on this thread. What about the special license plate covers that block cameras from seeing the plate numbers - yet are visible to the eye?

1. Cameras on police cars 2. Cameras at toll booths to catch skip artists. Definitely NOT on traffic lights or speed control.

Video cams should go to responsible dog constables to enhance their jobs in dog enforcement.

Yes i agree that even the police officers do break the law when they are chasing people speeding, people talking on their cellphone when they should be keeping their eyes on the road.I think talking on your cellphone should not be allowed and the law should be enforced by each state.People speeding is very dangerous and their should be more police cars in every city. The laws are to liberal and should be strictly enforced.

Red Light and Speed Cams should be handed over to a Citizens Commission and used to catch cops abusing the law and the fine monies should go back to the taxpayers.

Cameras on police cars and toll booths. I voted for toll booths.
Other places are intrusive and don't always give the entire picture.

I suppose speed control video cameras are needed on residential and school areas, however more than one of the above is appropriate.

dangnad: still pictures are actually more troublesome than video evidence of a moving violation, because they take away the situation surrounding the violation. The still image won't show a creeping car or a false alarm, or other issues that might otherwise cause it to not be a violation.
As for speed cameras, they use radar to determine vehicle speed then take a picture of the license plate, vehicle and usually a picture of the driver as well for identity purposes.

I personally supporthe use for them on police cars, toll booths and red light cameras but that is just my opinion! People shouldn't run red lights yet you see it all the time especially here in Odessa on 42nd Street!

Remember the question asked about VIDEO cameras. They're certainly necessary for police cars, mostly to watch the police themselves.
A video camera to catch red light runners, toll booth runners, etc. would be inappropriate. A still pic including the license plate is required.
I suppose it would good for rolling through stop signs but how about cost/day or cost/catch.
How would video work for speed control? Isn't that for radar?

I find it quite interesting that everyone who is driving supposedly passed drivers education in high school or some other course equal to that. Last I checked the rules are in the books used to teach those classes and courses. Shows the complete disregard for the laws which are intended to safely allow us to drive, which is a privilege not a right one is born into. As for cameras, I strongly feel they are needed in all the situations to act as a reminder to obey the law. Cameras never will prevent an accident or someone from breaking the law, but they will help hold those who break them accountable for their actions. Unfortunately I live in a state where video enforcement is not allowed other then in patrol cars. Will echo what others have said. Obey the law and you have nothing to worry about other then the other idiots out there who feel they are owed the world.

I was with my sister in-law a couple weeks ago as she SLOWLY rolled toward a red light to save gas. It snapped a picture as if she were going to run the red, but the light did in fact turn green before she went through. How is that appropriate use?

It's time we enforced our traffic laws like they should be and if it means the use of cameras to do it I'm all for it.
People have tried to use Germany as an example of areas that drive fast and are safe. That is true. My cousin that was stationed there for 8 years while in the army told me that the Germans STRICTLY enforce their traffic laws. Even on the autobahn in the sections that have no speed limit you can drive what ever speed you want but don't get caught tailgating, not yeilding when coming on the highway, weaving in and out of traffic, ect or you will pay a hefty fine. In the areas that of the autobahn and other roads that have speed limits they use radar cameras. They also have red light cameras.
It must work for them because in 2009 7.2 people per 100,000 automobiles were killed in accidents on their roads. Here in the USA that figure more than doubles. We had 15.0 people per 100,000 automobiles killed on our roads. I don't remember what Germany ranked but we were 93rd in the world for deaths per 100,000 automobiles. That means 92 countries in the world are better than we are when it comes to deaths on our roads.
The problem is here is that when someone is speeding, fails to yeild coming on the highway, runs a light, ect and almosts hits someone. That person that almost got hit will say "why aren't the cops out here enforcing the traffic laws". But When they get caught doing the same thing that same person that was complaining about the cops not enforcing the law will say "they are only doing it for revenue generation" or "they're just trying to meet their ticket quota". In my 23+ years of driving I've gotten one speeding ticket during my first year on the road. I haven't had a moving violation of any kind since. I've also had only one minor fender bender when I hit a patch of ice during a storm doing 20 mph and hit the guard rail. The reason for such a good record is because I follow the traffic laws including the speedlimits I might not agree with in some areas here because they are still the law.
People cause an accident or run a light at an intersection that has a camera and they blame it on the camera. I want to know something about those people. Did the camera take over control of the automobile or your mind. Last I knew the driver was in control of the automobile. It's the fact that people don't want to take responsibility for their own actions like they should. There are two intersections that I go thru everyday going back and forth to work that have had red light cameras for three years + and I've never gotten a ticket from them.
I look at it as if you are following the traffic laws you'll never have anything to worry about.

One thing that I have witnessed personally was my niece. the use of camera's at stop lights does not tell you EXACTLY who was driving the vehicle, therefore when my niece ran a stop light my sister was ticketed. I do think to some extent the camera's help, but I also think they need to ticket those idiots who block traffic trying to beat the light from changing. All that does is cause more problems and slow traffic flow because other people are not able to move when the light says they should.

While nothing pisses me off more than being a victim of "that flash, " it does what it's supposed to do... slows us down and reduces accidents. Driving is legally a privilege, not a right. That which helps saves lives is right. My only grjp with photoradar has been on highway 51 in phoenix. And there only because the speed limit changes from 65 to 55 And back With little warning and Strategically placed radar to take advantage of The driver rather than help safety.

I believe all of the above have uses that outweigh the negative. I cannot believe how many bad drivers and risky drivers there is in Sioux City. Any thing that may help keep them in line is a good thing.
