I was an automatic, but that is in my chevy 3500 pick-up with a 454 in it, now with these gas prices I ride my honda when it's nice out and pulled my 911 carrera out of storage. The truck hasn't been moved in 7 weeks.

I drive a 6 cyl Mitsu Eclipse GT manual. My wife drives a 4cyl Ford Focus wagon. Her job requires her to carry a lot of material (weight) + she has a roof rack and could watch her tire pressure better. She wins the bang for the buck award in the family - - my car takes premium BUT if I keep my foot out of it and coast hills etc I can easily match her mileage city or hwy!!

With the gas prices the way they are, my primary vehicle just changed to a motorcycle. I now get 65 mpg vs 22 on my chevy cobalt.

My last three vehicles were manuals - 2 were 5 speed, one was a three speed. The problem is that when I moved to a place that had heavy traffic, manuals weren't practical anymore. And then when I moved here to LaLa land, I had to get rid of my 5-speed daily driver. Traffic here is terrible, so I switched to a 4 speed automatic when I moved out here.

Automatic for home, a manual for work, although more del. trucks are coming as automatics nowadays. Probably because so many new hires have no idea how to drive a stick.

To CrackedLCD: You brought up a point that I had forgotten which is the maintenance cost. I rebuilt a Chrysler 727 for a one ton Dodge van a few years ago and the same year bought a Ford Aerostar which just had the transmission rebuilt. It cost $2,100 to rebuild the Ford transmission and only $550 for the Dodge which included the torque converter Those electronic transmissions are not cheap.

I have an automatic, but I drive it like a manual, switching between 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (overdrive) depending on the conditions and speed limit. I hope I don't foul up the transmission doing so.

Sammy, when it comes right down to it, so few know anymore how to drive a stick, the audience for them is diminishing.

Nowadays with dual clutch autos and things like that the economy difference is negligible. The maintenance costs, on the other hand, are sky high. But people treat cars like plastic containers: completely disposable. Fewer care about the long term life of their cars because they're trading them in every 2-5 years. The new tranny cost is going to be someone else's problem. Still, the "new breed" of autos are getting more and more sporty, responsive and intuitive. The old "slushbox" style is on the way out. They're all horrid as far as I'm concerned.

Although I have left knee trouble, I still prefer the old manual. VW and Honda still make great, smooth shifters. Really, GM does too but they're hard to come by apparently.

One last thing is the rise in traffic. A manual is a pain in long term stop and go traffic, which is what most metro areas have these days. Plus with one hand on the shifter that's one less hand to Twitter or text or put on makeup or read the paper or eat a burger (although I've mastered that last part, lol.)

To gasmeup52: Your post brought back memories of the car on which I learned to drive. It was a Fiat with a 4 speed on the column. I have never seen anything like it (before or since) 4 on the tree.

To everyone else: Although most people polled say that they drive automatics, many desire driving a manual. Why is it that standard shifts are not as readily available? Is it that the auto makers are NOT listening?

My first automatic was a disaster to learn to drive. I kept trying to pull the shift lever into a different gear while depressing the brake pedal. I still get confused (not often) when switching from either auto to standard or vice versa. My vehicles have been about 40% stick and 60% auto.
