Let's hope the 8% aren't driving and so will continue that way, not changing. As for those that are willing to pay more, you may get your wish, in a classic example of watch out what you wish for. We've been modifying some of our driving habits for years and will continue to do so as prices rise.

I've changed my habits over the last few years. Now I let the car do the driving when I put it on autopilot and climb in the back to sleep.

If you can afford to joyride or not plan ahead and consolidate trips, you're blowing money out your tailpipe. What's sad is that MPA/MACS fixes the price at the pump and most stations follow. Not even the Attorney General will touch them. Other states don't raise the prices every Friday. Look at Wyoming's prices! What's our excuse other than greed? Another thing: bad driving habits are so entrenched that people won't change if gas goes to $9 a gallon: "go like hell and slam on the brakes" mentality. Weave in and out of traffic just to wait at the next red light. Utter stupidity. I consistently get 41 to 45 mpg with my Honda Civic by not doing jackrabbit starts, coasting 1/2 mile to the light that just turned red ahead, and keeping my speed to 65 mph maximum.

If the price of gasoline has not already altered your driving habits, you are falling into the trap that was set. The price will continue to rise until it reaches the point where demand falls significantly. The only way prices will come back down is to lower demand - this doesn't mean stop driving, it means driving smarter.
As of this post, there are 26% of the people who say no effect until at least $5.00 gas is at hand and 8% of the total say gas price will not cause a change to habits. I know there are those that will say "if we let it affect us, then we have lost", but when it affects some of us, it affects all of us.

I already changed. I bought a vw jetta tdi and now I feel like gas is under $2 a gallon. Feels great to be able to drive all week for $10 instead of $30.

Its seems like every year about this time the gas goes up and then it comes down. I have it this high before. I do hope it goes down because if it doesn't there will be some changes to where I go and what I do.

"Obama has no control over oil prices", yet when they just considered tapping our strategic reserves, the market price dropped $3 a barrel. Later that day when it was announced they would not, it jumped back up.
Sure makes me wonder what the price would have done if he had allowed the Keystone pipeline.
Yesterday he was in Nevada touting the success of the worlds largest solar facility. It was built with $51 Million in tax subsidies and had 5 permament employees. The power it generates costs significantly more than Hydro-electric and no one would buy it, except the power companies are under a government mandate to buy it.
I'm sure hoping for change in November.

I already drive as little as possible, only to commute to and from work. Errands and shopping have been cut down less than 25 miles a week. It takes some extra planning, but it's either sacrifice driving, eating or the little luxuries that you used to think you couldn't live without.

I hadn't seen my mom in over a month but besides finding a day I really thought about the gas for the 1-1/2 hr drive each way. I had a gift she'll enjoy, flavored coffee and tried to plan some errands on the way home. Our son wants to go to an Uncle's ranch for spring break...he's doing well in school & its a good place for him to be, but $100 for gas to take him down on a cycle & $148 to get him back a wk. later...we can't really afford it, but memories have to be made.

I try to work from home as much as possible. I believe that everyone should try to work from home. They should commute ONLY IF THEY HAVE TO. Everyone should lobby their representatives (Congressmen, Members of Parliament, etc.) at all levels of government to ensure that ONLY those who REALLY need to work outside of their homes have to commute. Otherwise they must work from home. With the Internet, Video conferencing, and many other developments, much of working and learning can be done almost entirely from home. Just imagine the savings in almost every kind of expenditure including, but not limited to, road maintenance, policing, insurance, fuel, vehicle repairs, accidents, ill-health due pollution, and environmental damage.
When more and more of us start working from home, it is quite conceivable that the price of fuel will come down in a hurry!

I drive about 80 miles round trip for work on the days that I am on hitch (I have a 7 days on, 7 days off work schedule). On my days off about the only thing I use my car for is errands around town and I have always tried to plan my errands to take the least amount of time/best route to drive. This is probably due to my being a commercial pilot? I chose to live in an area where I have a very short walk to get to restaurants and other activities so I would not have to worry about getting home safely/legally if I consume alcohol (back to the pilot thing) The increase in prices is definitely an unnecessary pain that we are having to deal with, but I'm already set up to deal with it. Again, an unnecessary pain to deal with seeing as how we have more oil than Saudi Arabia if the current administration would simply allow the oil industry to access it! Even IF the price of gas never again goes below $2.00/gal, I would rather pay for American oil to be made into gasoline and hopefully have some of that revenue trickle back into OUR economy while at the same time not have to be dependent upon the whims of the MIddle East. The President is WRONG when he says there is no quick fix to high gas prices. If drilling permits were issued to allow new drilling in the areas where recoverable oil has been discovered, the speculators would lower the price of oil almost overnight. History proves this to be true.

I am already doing as little fuel consumption as I can. This hope and change thing is killing the US economy. When do we start on the proposed pipeline and more refineries. Let the eco-nuts walk if they are so opposed to fossil fuel production.

I went back to a vehicle with stone rollers, that you have to propel yourself, with an open bottom so you can also use your bare feet to brake. I got a deal at Bedrock Motors.

Re: Bloonfoot..Sherrod Brown says speculation raises prices.
More class warfare from the Dems. The price of gas is high because the dollar is weak and gas formulas are being changed. Stop deficit spending, bring back a strong dollar and drill bably drill. Gas prices will come down. I'm sure senator Brown will give speculators the credit when prices start falling....Oh..maybe not.

I've already been car pooling for the last 3 years. I've stopped using my older diesel truck (pictured) except for when I need to haul furniture for our store. I think that we may be looking at a different "family" vehicle this year.

We traded our old gas-guzzler SUV for a newer hybrid, and then we use the hybrid almost exclusively in town or for business trips. It's cut our combined fuel consumption by 50%, and by 60% over the old SUV.

No matter what kind of transportation we use, someone out their will come up with a way to make money off the rest of us. Our city state or government. They are raising our taxes for the choices they make.
