The Cars Americans Will Not Buy

Road runner news -- April car sales data are out, and they are not cause for celebration. Though sales are up 2% overall from last April, they have cooled somewhat since the February and March run. There are a few winners, however, including Toyota (NYSE: TM), Chrysler and several European auto makers, some of which are up over 20%. Meanwhile, General Motors (NYSE: GM) and Ford (NYSE: F) are down.

While a few brands are doing incredibly well, dealers cannot even give away some models. “Days to turn,” or “days on the lot,” reflects the average number of days a vehicle is in dealer inventory before it is sold. All of the car models on our list spent more than 90 days on the lot, considerably longer than the 52-day average. Working with Edmunds.com, 24/7 Wall St. identified 10 cars that Americans are not buying

I test drove and had the Suzuki SX4 hatchback for a week in 2009. It was a fun car to drive, but horrible fuel mileage for the size.

"Dodge Ram 1500 2wd 6 cyl"

No kidding. Other than municipalities who want a barebones work truck, who else would buy a pickup truck configured that way?

I would not purchase a vehicle from the list. It did surprise me to see the RAM 1500 on the list.

The cars I won’t buy are anything made by Chrysler or should I say Fiat, also electric cars and hybrids are not on my shopping list either. Chrysler still owes the U.S. tax payer 1.3 billion dollars that we will never get back. EV’s and hybrids are far too expensive and don’t have the required performance.

Look on the bright side! With all the "lot time" these vehicles get, if you really, REALLY want one (which I don't), there are plenty from which to choose. You can take your time deciding, and probably get it for a good price.

None of the vehicles on the 10 worst sellers list are that great except which for the Toyota Matrix which has had a decent reliability record. The Toyota Yaris has been reliable, but a mediocre performer. The Honda Element is reliable, but it is an oddball.

"The Matrix debuted in 2003 as a hatchback variation on the Corolla. The car, like its compact role model, gets decent gas mileage of 26 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. It also received very good reviews on Consumer Reports for reliability, owner costs and depreciation. Nevertheless, sales of the vehicle have been terrible. Toyota sold 49,400 units of the hatchback in 2008, 14,470 units in 2010, and less than 14,000 in 2011."

Wow. That's a real drop in sales.

I'm in the market for a vehicle and thought, 'Great, this list will help me get a deal on cars that no one wants.' And then I saw it, no wonder. They're just not good cars for the most part.

@shatzila - Ditto here. In fact, I didn't buy ANY cars. Howver, I see a lot of Dodge Ram pickups and Caddies on the road (new Caddies just don't LOOK like Caddies now, they look like a generic fancy Olds, which I guess is really what they are and always have been anyhow). As for Honda Element & Toyoata Yaris, those vehicles are just plain FUGLY.

In 2005, Volkswagen entered into a partnership with Chrysler to develop its own minivan, using the American automaker’s Town & Country as the base model. The Routan, when it was introduced in 2008, became the first minivan made by the German company in North America.

Suprised about the Dodge since we have a LOT of pickups in the area but then, realized virtually all of them are extended cabs or crew cabs with 4 doors.
